| "The oldest Russian Orthodox church in North America is located here. Originally constructed in 1825 then renovated and enlarged in 1896, the historic Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Ascension of Christ, which overlooks Iliuliuk Bay, has stood on the island through harsh weather and the Japanese attack on the Aleutian islands in 1942. The small church, with its characteristic ‘onion’ domes, has a parish of about 150 members, mostly Aleuts, who are leading an effort to raise money for restoration. The church is currently on the list of the 12 most endangered national historic landmarks. (American Heritage Magazine). It is estimated it will cost approximately $2.2 million to make all the necessary repairs, including renovations of the bishop’s house which is located next to the church. Visitors will be awed by a private collection of the largest display of Russian artifacts, religious icons and art pieces in the state." excerpt from Unalaska Dutch Harbor |

This was a rare opportunity -- the M/V Kennicott was in the same waters with the M/V Tustumena.
Captain Bill Hopkins is on the Kennicott and Captain Merril (last picture on right) is on the Tustumena. |
